Welcome to the Summer 2008 Edition of Trailhead

Image Ah, Spring. The snow melts and green returns. The woods smell different, look different and feel different. There's sponginess where there used to be slipperiness. There are buds where there used to be branches. There's water where there used to be ice. Bring out the toys.

Even though the North Country Trail goes right past us, many of us have never explored it. We're suggesting a few day hikes, all of which are pretty much in your backyard.

We'll also introduce you to the newest northern Michigan trail, one winding from Gaylord to Mackinaw City. This reclaimed railbed offers something for everyone, including passing through lots of little towns with ice cream shops.

If you want to explore more on wheels, take that bike off-road. Our primer on mountain biking helps you look less like a newbie that first time out.

Some of us enjoy a leisurely paddle on a warm day and then there are the rest. Read about the racers who canoe through the night in the AuSable Canoe Marathon.

All of this playing means you should probably rest. Environmentally conscious lodging exists in places you might not realize.

And don't forget to check back here often, as we'll be updating trailheadmag.com throughout the year with the latest outdoor news.

1I just received this issue in the mail and I just love this magazine. I currently live in Florida and reading about all the outdoors activities of Northern Michigan makes me feel like I live there already. My family and I will be residents there soon. I love those northern woods!!!
